About the Exam
The Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) conducts the Group C Combined Examination to fill Group C posts in many departments of the Maharashtra Government. This is one of the biggest state government recruitment drives of the year. A corrigendum issued on 6 November 2026 raised the total vacancies from 5,707 to 16,797 posts across 27 cadres – so lakhs of graduates in Maharashtra now have a fresh chance to apply.
The biggest blocks of posts are Clerk-Typist (3,966 posts), Gram Revenue Officer or Talathi (1,840 posts), Craft Instructor (1,388 posts) and Assistant Agriculture Officer (1,203 posts). Other large posts include Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector (461 posts), Livestock Supervisor (322 posts), Tax Assistant (282 posts), Supply Inspector (214 posts) and Junior Chemist (153 posts).
Eligibility
Education: A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university is enough for most posts, including Clerk-Typist, Tax Assistant and Talathi. Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector needs a diploma or a degree in Mechanical or Automobile Engineering, and a few specialist posts ask for a degree in the matching subject.
Age limit (as on 1 October 2026): Minimum 19 years for most posts (18 years for Tax Assistant). Maximum 38 years for general candidates and 43 years for backward classes, orphan and EWS candidates. A government resolution dated 5 November 2026 gives a one-year relaxation in the upper age limit. Further relaxations apply for sportspersons, ex-servicemen and persons with disabilities. You must be an Indian citizen.
Selection Stages
The selection has four stages. First comes the Preliminary Examination – an objective CBT of 100 marks that works as a screening test. Candidates who clear it sit for the Main Examination (400 marks; 300 marks for AMVI), which decides the final merit. Some posts then add a skill test – a typing test in Marathi and English for Clerk-Typist and Tax Assistant – or a physical test for AMVI. The last step is document verification before appointment. MPSC will announce the main exam date separately after the prelims result.
